The quote about science advancing by funerals is so true. I was just reading an obscure book on advancements in deciphering the Maya script (guaranteed to cure insomnia), and the biggest hindrance to the fuller understanding we enjoy today was one man, the leading light in the field. He was brilliant and forceful and unforgiving of those who disagreed with him. And he had to die before the discipline could begin unlocking the incredible history recorded in the glyphs.
