Excellent discussion of our human difficulties with understanding time - but I can't believe you missed the chance to embed a version of Steely Dan's "Home at Last" when mentioning Odysseus and the Sirens!
And while this was certainly educational with regard to investing, wouldn't there also be an opportunity to explore this theme with regard to navigating between the Scylla and Charybdis of our current political environment? How, exactly, does the electorate hold elites accountable for their excessive "presentism" - which both R's and D's exhibit in spades? How does one go about avoiding the Sirens of political tribalism in order to make wise electoral choices? Is being tied to the mast of either the D or the R tribe a "disciplined" decision, or simply the easiest?
Pro- or anti-Trump is not (and may never have been) the real question, anymore than being a strong R or D. In a real world, there are almost never just two choices. A third choice, always available, is to advocate for constructive compromise - which seems to be the choice of the authors of our Constitution.
How do we learn to elect people who are willing, and able, to get back to that level of compromise? History (and the fossil record) suggests that while our species is not very good at this, we were getting better until relatively recently. It would seem that our survival as a country, and possibly as a species, will depend on the willingness of a strong majority to take a big step past "presentism" as well as tribalism, in order to succeed.
Regarding the "most terrifying" let's get real. These are mentally unstable people yes. As soon as they meet any resistance to their tough talk, (which is exactly that, only tough talk by emasculated losers) they fold and they will fold just like the January 6 faux patriots begging for no jail time. They are pathetic. Hats off to Reuters.
